Few college football programs can compete with the Ohio State Buckeyes on the recruiting trail. Today, they got things rolling on the 2023 class.

Ty Lockwood, a four-star tight end from Independence High School in Thompson’s Station, Tenn., became the first commit for Ryan Day in that class. He made the decision public this afternoon.

“All glory to God! Thankful for it all! GO BUCKEYES!” he tweeted along with a graphic of him in his high school and future college jerseys, along with The Shoe.

247Sports‘ composite rankings have him as the No. 142 player nationally, and the No. 8-ranked tight end in the country. Ohio State beat out Florida State, Penn State, and South Carolina, among others.

Ohio State signed the No. 2 ranked class nationally in 2021, and its 14-person class for 2022 is currently at No. 3 overall and No. 2 in the Big Ten.

Bennett Christian, a four-star tight end out of Georgia, is currently pledged for 2022, while three-star Colorado native Sam Hart is at the position from the current freshman class.

“On several fronts I’m glad he’s able to make this decision and really move forward,” Lockwood’s father David told Eleven Warriors, after his son’s decision was made. “He’ll be able to be focused on football and getting better as a player and a leader … When we found a fit, we decided this is where he knew he wanted to be. At that point, why wait?”

Lockwood is coming off of a solid season at Independence, catching 43 passes for 606 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore. Listed at 6-foot-5, 225, he should be a nice big target for whichever young Ohio State quarterback has the starting job by the time he steps on campus in two years.
