New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton won’t be allowed to join his teammates on the practice field until Thursday because of a misunderstanding regarding COVID-19 tests. This gives Mac Jones the chance to close the gap in their quarterback competition.
During this Tuesday’s press conference, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick admit that the next few practices are a huge deal for Jones. He didn’t outright say that Jones can win the starting job, but he’s leaving the door open for the rookie quarterback.
As you’d expect, the NFL world is very excited to see what Jones can do during Newton’s absence. We’ve seen plenty of young quarterbacks dethrone veterans in the past, so the blueprint is there for the Alabama product.
“The next few days are important for Mac Jones to take advantage of his opportunity,” Ryan Spagnoli of SB Nation said. “We have seen guys like Herbert/Lamar run away with the starting job after the teams current starter missed time due to an unfortunate situation.”

Although this is a really unfortunate situation for Newton, it doesn’t sound like NFL fans feel bad for him.
“Regardless of his vaccination status, Newton should’ve known the rules,” Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal. “The Patriots should also reinforce the rules. This situation was completely avoidable.”

If Jones does win the starting job over Newton, the Patriots’ fan base should expect an accurate and efficient signal-caller under center.
Even in spite of the COVID misunderstanding, Mac Jones will start over Cam Newton sooner rather than later.
When Mac does start, accuracy will be in abundance at Foxboro! 🎯 https://t.co/7QmybSkvrq

Last week, Jones completed 13-of-19 passes for 146 yards and led the Patriots to three touchdown drives against the Eagles.
Another strong performance from Jones could result in him leapfrogging Newton for the top spot on New England’s depth chart.
