After losing star pass rusher Carl Lawson to a season-ending injury over a week ago, the New York Jets scoured the trade market for a potential replacement. Today, they found one in Shaq Lawson.
The Houston Texans traded the former first-round pick to the Jets today. In exchange, the team received a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Lawson is hardly an elite pass rusher, but he knows how to get after the quarterback. In 64 career games, the former Clemson star has 56 QB hits, 29 tackles for loss, 140 tackles and 20.5 sacks.
Last year with the Miami Dolphins, Lawson played in 14 games, recording 4.0 sacks, 32 tackles and 18 QB hits. He was traded to the Houston Texans in March.
Jets fans on Twitter appear pretty excited to be adding Shaq Lawson to their depleted ranks. They had especially high praise for general manager Joe Douglas:
Joe Douglas strikes again!
He trades away a 2022 6th Rounder for Shaq Lawson
Douglas acquired that draft pick by trading Jordan Willis to the 49ers last season

Expectations for the New York Jets this season were already low before Carl Lawson’s season-ending injury. While Shaq Lawson seems unlikely to completely turn the defense around, he at least offers them experience at a critical position of need.
Last year the Jets defense was a bottom 10 unit. They gave up 457 points – the most in franchise history.
Their defense doesn’t appeared to have improved much in the offseason unfortunately. They’ve been torched constantly in preseason games.
It may be tough for Lawson to full become a part of the defense by the time the season begins. But at least they’ve attempted to fill a void.
