NFL World Reacts To The Carl Lawson Injury News

August 19, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

New York Giants v Cincinnati Bengals

Any hopes that the New York Jets have of being good on defense this year hinge on their pass rusher Carl Lawson. Unfortunately, it appears that his first year with the team could be over before it even begins.

Lawson was carted off with an injury during the Jets’ joint practice with the Green Bay Packers today. Players reportedly knelt down around him and prayed as they awaited the cart.

By all accounts it was a left leg injury that the Jets star pass rusher suffered. Needless to say, that bodes very poorly for what the damage might be.

Many Jets players have had an up-and-down training camp so far. But not Lawson. Just about every scouting report on him was that he has been tearing it up with the Jets in his first season.

Oh no. Had the folks in Florham Park gushing with the way he’s performed at #Jets camp. https://t.co/iyQLwjG0d9

Has been having a stellar camp, too. https://t.co/5oyiK2TZMr

Needless to say, Jets fans and NFL analysts are gutted that this injury seems serious:

Cancel all practices until week 1, IMO

Carl Lawson was a fourth round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2017 NFL Draft after a stellar career at Auburn. While his sack total hasn’t yielded him many Pro Bowl or All-Pro votes, he gets quarterback hits at a rate that ranks among the elite.

This past year was Lawson’s first as a starter and he rewarded the Bengals with 5.5 sacks, a career-high 32 QB hits, two forced fumbles and 36 tackles. But the team decided to let him hit free agency, where the Jets were waiting to pounce.

The Jets gave Lawson a three-year $45 million contract in hopes that he would lead their revamped pass rush.

Hopefully Lawson’s injury isn’t serious. But if it is, the Jets defense is in serious trouble this year.
