NFL World Reacts To Gardner Minshew, Eagles Trade

August 28, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Gardner Minshew runs the football for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Gardner Minshew era in Jacksonville officially came to an end this Saturday, as the former sixth-round pick was shipped to Philadelphia in a somewhat bizarre trade.

Even though Minshew has been very productive for the Jaguars, the front office only received a conditional sixth-round pick in return for him. That seems like really bad value for a quarterback who had 5,530 passing yards and 37 touchdown passes in his first two NFL seasons.

As a result, Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer is receiving a lot of criticism this Saturday for the way he handled his quarterback situation.

“Urban Meyer made the No. 1 overall pick share first team reps with someone they traded for a sixth round pick not even a week after the battle ended,” Jaguars reporter John Shipley said. “I’ll never understand why that went on so long, even less so now.”

NFL analyst Warren Sharp also criticized Meyer for the same exact reason.

“The Jags were VERY DUMB to limit Trevor Lawrence’s reps in practice & games to work in time for a guy you were going to trade…for a 6th,” Sharp said. “Conditional sixth-round pick for Minshew is ridiculously low.”

Now, the focus shifts over to the quarterback situation in Philadelphia.

Jalen Hurts is expected to be the Week 1 starter for the Eagles, and rightfully so. Whether he’ll be able to keep that job for the entire season is unknown at this time.

Minshew will have to learn the Eagles’ playbook before he can work his way up the depth chart. For now, he’ll probably sit behind Jalen Hurts and Joe Flacco.

Jacksonville, meanwhile, will start Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. Behind him on the depth chart is veteran signal-caller C.J. Beathard.
