The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles are holding joint practices this week, and one Philly defensive back has been using the occasion to challenge Cam Newton.
During this morning’s session, Eagles second-year safety K’Von Wallace taunted Newton, calling the onetime league MVP “Checkdown king” during 7-on-7. Wallace apparently wasn’t feeling threatened by Newton’s propensity for going after short completions.
It’s not atypical to see trash talk during these summer joint practice sessions, but Wallace’s words for Newton have drawn more reaction than usual, given the young defender’s inexperience and Newton’s resume as a pro.
Dang this is cold blooded https://t.co/GlNQMEUSE1

Wallace is running with the 2s today and Cam just pulled Mac to face his unit in 7 on 7. Didn’t throw to him in three reps… https://t.co/qGqxuZC32H

Maybe Newton is coming to the end of the line. But, it should be noted that he reportedly had a strong performance overall during team drills, no matter what Wallace said.
According to reporter Andrew Callahan, Newton was 13-of-14 passing, and it sounds like that one incompletion came on a drop.
*13/14 overall in team drills.

With a little more than three weeks until the season opener, Newton has not officially been named the Patriots’ starter over rookie Mac Jones. However, he’s still the reported favorite for the job.
“Cam Newton is the favorite, but he’s got work to do here,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said recently. “I keep hearing that Bill Belichick trusts Cam Newton, that he’s in position to start Week 1, but he’s got to make some progress here because Mac Jones is coming. He showed accuracy and decision-making all of training camp, and he showed it again last night.”
