There is never a good time to have an NFL injury, but they’re especially cruel in the preseason. Players have worked all offseason to prepare for the upcoming season, only to have it taken away during a game that doesn’t count.
AJ McCarron went down with an injury on Saturday night.
The Atlanta Falcons backup quarterback suffered what is believed to be a serious ACL injury. A torn ACL would sideline McCarron for the entire 2021 season.
The feeling inside the Falcons organization is that QB AJ McCarron has a torn ACL… MRI later today to confirm pic.twitter.com/LlMvSf9VEW

The Falcons have yet to officially confirm the news, though the organization “fears” the worst.
No official word yet but fear is significant knee injury for Falcons backup QB AJ McCarron. Undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks is the only other backup QB roster currently on their roster.
Arthur Smith said they’re always evaluating QB market.

The NFL world is heartbroken by the news.
“I really feel for AJ McCarron,” Falcons coach Arthur Smith said. “Any time something like that happens and it’s non-contact, it’s tough when you know what these guys put into it. I feel for AJ. We’ll obviously get the MRI to confirm but he’s heartbroken.
“He had bounced back and he was out there fighting, fighting for his team and trying to get the extra yards.”
Unfortunately, McCarron was one of multiple serious preseason injuries this weekend.
Worst part of preseason is the injuries. Notable ones Saturday included:
*Falcons QB AJ McCarron, significant right knee injury.
*Seahawks’ LB Ben Burr-Kirven and WR John Ursua, both major knee injuries.
*Rams’ RB Raymond Calais, a serious foot injury that requires surgery.

Unsurprisingly, one backup quarterback “option” can already be ruled out.
My thoughts on Falcons’ second preseason loss and AJ McCarron’s injury should be posted soon.
On a related note, they are not signing Tim Tebow
(I strangely feel the need to constantly Tweet this again.)

The Falcons have former Florida Gators quarterback Feleipe Franks on the roster. The undrafted quarterback could be in line for a prominent spot on the depth chart.
Atlanta could also pursue a veteran quarterback trade for the backup position.
The Falcons open the season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Eagles.
