The Jacksonville Jaguars turned in another dismal performance on offense through the first three quarters of their second preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. As a result, after just two exhibitions contests, the NFL future of first-year head coach Urban Meyer is being called into question.
The Jaguars offense lacked any sort of explosiveness and many pointed out the lack of ingenuity in the team’s play-calling on Monday. The first unit, which featured No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence, struggled to move the ball down the field against the Saints swarming defense and quickly fell into a deep hole. Jacksonville scored just three points through the first three quarters.
Despite a furious comeback in the final 15 minutes, Meyer and the Jaguars coaching staff had a lot to answer for after Monday’s loss. The former Florida and Ohio State head coach didn’t provide specifics but pointed out that the team’s starting offense has had serious problems in the preseason.
“The starting offense, two weeks in a row . . . we’re just struggling to get into some rhythm,” Meyer said. “We’re not balanced right now.”
After back-to-back poor showings on offense, Jaguars fans are desperately hoping for some sort of change. At least a few media members are wondering if that could spell trouble for Meyer in his first year on the job.

The Jaguars most likely won’t swap out a first-year head coach in the middle of his first season on the job, but that doesn’t mean other changes won’t be discussed. Meyer could opt to make some decisions on his staff if the offense continues to move in the wrong direction once the regular season starts.
Either way, Jacksonville will only have a few weeks to make their final adjustments. The Jaguars will open the 2021 regular season on Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Houston Texans.
