With the regular season only a few weeks away, the New Orleans Saints still aren’t sure who’ll be their starting quarterback for a Week 1 clash with the Green Bay Packers. Sean Payton will have to decide between either Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston.
The Saints started Hill in their preseason opener, but that doesn’t mean he’ll win the starting job. After all, the coaching staff has been rotating their quarterbacks throughout training camp.
Since the Saints are very committed to a quarterback rotation, they’ll let Winston get a crack at the starting gig in their second preseason game.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, New Orleans is going to give Winston a “healthy run” with the first-team offense on Monday night against the Jaguars.
“I’m told he should get a healthy run at quarterback this week,” Fowler said on Get Up. “The Saints have not revealed who’s starting yet, but there is a good chance he does start, because they want to flip-flop Taysom Hill and Winston. He can start to try to take ownership of this job. He’s getting Tre’Quan Smith back; that’s significant. Those two worked together all summer. He’s back from injury and maybe they’ll start connecting in game action.”
Winston looked sharp at times in the preseason opener for New Orleans, but he did throw an interception toward the end of the first half.
If Winston performs well on Monday night, he could create some separation between him and Hill.
Kickoff for the Jaguars-Saints game is on Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
