The NFL is reportedly considering a change to its current overtime rules.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, there is “a lot of momentum” for a possible change coming in the near future.
“On a NFL competition committee call with chairman Rich McKay and others. McKay says there is a lot of momentum for changing overtime rules. It’s more, which of the two proposals? And can they get 24 votes on the first crack? Possible, but a challenge,” Rapoport reports.

The NFL’s current overtime rules were put under a microscope after an AFC divisional round matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills in 2021. In a thrilling overtime matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen that saw the two star quarterbacks trade touchdown blows, the Bills were unable to match the Chiefs after allowing a touchdown on the first possession of OT.
Many fans wished Allen and his offense got a shot to tie things up with a touchdown of their own. These fans were pleased by the news of this potential change.
“Thank god. Just let teams play the full 10 minutes, it’s not that hard. Keep ties as an option,” one wrote.
“It’s easy to me. Play a full 15min OT if a team is winning at the end, they win. If it’s still tied, it’s a tie. The sudden death thing is so unfootball,” another added.
Others think the current rules are fine as is.
“Here’s an idea: stop the other team from scoring a TD. Cincinnati showed how it is done. Why does the defense get zero blame for not stopping the offense?” one asked.
“NFL OT is perfect the way it is….sudden death on a TD or a FG if the kicking team gets the stop is just fine,” another added.
What do you think of this possible overtime rule change?
