NFL.com Suggests 2 Patriots Players Could Be Traded

August 26, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Rams WR Cooper Kupp is tackled by a member of the Patriots.

The NFL deadline to cut rosters down to 53 players is less than a week away. We usually get some last minute trades around this time every summer.

The New England Patriots have been active already, trading running back Sony Michel to the Rams on Wednesday and acquiring rookie cornerback Shaun Wade from the Baltimore Ravens today. They might not be done either, knowing Bill Belichick.

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal released a column this week highlighting potential notable players who could be traded or cut. In the trade portion, he includes a pair of Patriots: wide receiver N’Keal Harry and cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Harry, a 2019 first-round pick, has been a disappointment in New England and even requested a trade earlier this summer. However, he’s currently injured, which would hamper the Patriots’ ability to deal the former Arizona State star.

As for Gilmore, he and the team were locked in a contract dispute much of this offseason. He’s in camp, but has not Physically Unable to Perform list and has not practice.

“It looks like a game of chicken on whether Gilmore will practice before getting a raise or get a raise before practicing,” Rosenthal writes. “Belichick appears to love Gilmore too much to trade him when they are trying to make the playoffs, but a stunning deal just before Week 1 is Belichick’s version of playing the hits.”

Gilmore is due to make a little more than $7 million this coming season in the final year of a five-year deal. The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year and two-time All Pro remains an attractive trade candidate for a team in need of secondary help.

But, as Rosenthal said, it remains to be seen if the Patriots would actually deal the 30-year-old corner, or if they’ll call his bluff and try to make him play this fall.
