The quarterback controversy in New Orleans is officially over. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Saints will be going with Jameis Winston for their season opener against the Packers.
Winston was in a quarterback battle with Taysom Hill throughout training camp. Sean Payton kept rotating the quarterbacks with the first-string offense to see if anyone can create separation.
Well, Winston created some much-needed separation with his performance against the Jaguars this past Monday night. The former No. 1 overall pick threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns in just one quarter of action.
Despite witnessing that outstanding performance on Monday night, Sean Payton refused to immediately name Winston the starter.
“We’ll see. I’ll keep you posted,” Payton said when asked what he needs to see in order to name a starting quarterback. “Yeah, I don’t have a timeframe though. When we know what direction we are going, we will let you guys know.”
Judging by Schefter’s report, Payton has made a decision behind closed doors.
Schefter said multiple players on the Saints were seen congratulating Winston for winning the starting job.
“Saints players were spotted yesterday congratulating Jameis Winston, who locked up the job with a strong performance during Monday night’s preseason win over the Jaguars,” Schefter said.
Winston will now have the chance to prove that he can learn from the mistakes that made him an outcast just a year ago. And if he can do that, New Orleans will remain a playoff-caliber team.
