NBA World Reacts To Joel Embiid Contract News

August 17, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Joel Embiid raising his arms during a Philadelphia 76ers game. He reportedly approves of Mike D'Antoni as potential next Sixers coach.

Joel Embiid is going to be a Philadelphia 76er for years to come. Early this morning, news broke that the superstar center is signing a “supermax” contract extension with the team.

Embiid, a former one-and-done star at Kansas, has seven years under his belt at the NBA level. Ahead of the 2018 season, he signed his first big NBA extension: a five-year deal worth $147.7 million.

This new contract vaults him even higher. According to multiple reports he’s set to make about $50 million more in a new extension that runs through the 2026-27 season.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reports that he’s set to sign a four-year deal worth about $196 million. The contract comes off of a career year for Embiid, in which he averaged 28.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.

Using a projected cap of $124.95M in 2023-24, Joel Embiid’s extension projects to look like:

23-24: $43,732,500 – age 29
24-25: $47,231,100 – are 30
25-26: $50,729,700 – age 31
26-27: $54,228,300 – age 32

Embiid reached his fourth straight All-Star Game this season, as well as his third All-NBA Second Team selection in four years. He was an NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection for the third time in four years.

He finished second in MVP voting this year, behind first-time winner Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. He only received one first-place vote, but had an impressive 62 second-place selections, vaulting him ahead of Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

He is a massive fan favorite in Philadelphia. Sixers fans have to be fired up this morning.

Not sure if there’s ever been an athlete who loves Philadelphia and the culture like Joel Embiid. It’s incredible that they nearly screwed it up.

Getting Joel Embiid on a super-max extension was the number 1 priority for the #Sixers. Now they’ll completely avoid his unrestricted free agency that would’ve been after the 2022-23 season.

With Joel Embiid’s extension, and the ones recently signed by Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, we have reached the point where elite NBA players are being signed to deals that eventually will hover around $700,000 per game. Per game. Played or not played. Load managed or not.

The Philadelphia 76ers, in their first year under Doc Rivers, fell short of their lofty goals last season. The team flamed out in the Eastern Conference Semifinals to the upstart Atlanta Hawks, falling as the No. 1 seed in the conference to a surprising No. 5 seed.

Congrats on the supermax, @JoelEmbiid!

FOUR YEARS!! That is our window to get it done. Only smart decisions from here on out from the #Sixers’ front office, coaches & players ⏳

I guess Embiid likes Philly enough to stay. Lets hope he stays healthy thru this contract and can build a championship roster around him

Joel Embiid certainly hasn’t been the issue for the team. It must figure out what it will do with Ben Simmons, the talented but completely shooting-averse point guard who has failed to come along as a major offensive threat and second superstar behind Embiid. He’s been the subject of numerous trade rumors this offseason.
