Shohei Ohtani has wowed crowds across the league nearly every time he’s taken the diamond this year. But on Wednesday night, the two-way superstar provided an especially unforgettable performance.
Stepping up to the plate for his fourth at bat in the eighth inning, Ohtani blasted a 430-foot home run to deep right field — marking his 40th homer of the year. In addition to furthering his league-leading total, this milestone makes him the quickest player to 40 home runs in Los Angeles Angels history.
But, as we know about Ohtani, his talents don’t just end at the plate. Through eight innings pitched, the LA ace struck out eight batters, walked zero and allowed just six hits — bringing his overall pitching record to 8-1 and ERA to 2.79.
The MLB world took to Twitter to react to these unprecedented figures.

What he has done is absolutely frickin’ incredible. While the national networks are fixated on rookie quarterbacks in the NFL and the NBA Summer League, check out Ohtani. One of best stories ever in sports. https://t.co/P5ZMxDVojk

Shohei Ohtani’s stats are absurd…
HR: 39 (1st)
RBI: 86 (3rd)
OPS: 1.017 (2nd)
SB: 17 (9th)
ERA: 2.93 (12th)
WHIP: 1.09 (17th)He’s on pace to end the season with 54 home runs, 118 RBI & a sub 3.00 ERA, which has to be considered one of the greatest MLB seasons ever.

Trying to make my brain understand that Shohei Ohtani has 40 HR.
How ‘bout this:
The Angels’ starting pitcher tonight has more HR than Mookie Betts & Bryce Harper combined.

Ohtani’s 40th home run gave the Angels their final 3-1 lead over the Tigers. Even so, chants of “MVP” from the Detroit crowd rained down on the Japanese superstar as he rounded third base.
Clearly, Ohtani has the entire baseball world enamored.
The Angels will look to complete a 3-0 sweep of the Tigers in a 1:10 p.m. ET matchup this afternoon.
