Legendary NFL wide receiver Michael Irvin doesn’t appear to be happy with how one young quarterback is being treated by his franchise.
Dwayne Haskins was a first round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The former Ohio State Buckeyes star put up video game-type numbers in college. Haskins, a Maryland native, was drafted by his hometown team.
The former Buckeyes star played midway through his rookie season. He didn’t play well, but many rookies don’t. Haskins was then named the starter in 2020 by new head coach Ron Rivera, but he was benched after a couple of games.
Rivera has been brutally honest when speaking about Haskins. He even demoted the former Buckeyes star to third team.
Irvin respects Rivera, but the legendary Dallas Cowboys star had a blunt message for the head coach: Don’t ruin Haskins.
“I understand they made the decision and some things happen,” Irvin said on 106.7 The Fan.
“They made some decisions, the next thing you know they were sending Dwayne Haskins, the kid, home,” Irvin added. “And I got upset because as soon as they made the decision, then one of our reporters come out and said well the coaches said that they want him to be, show more of a leadership by coming early and leaving late. I was like stop, stop it guys, you already benched him, let’s not ruin him. You know what I mean, let’s not destroy him.”
At this point, it’s difficult to imagine Haskins experiencing success in Washington. It might be best for all parties if he was traded in the offseason.
“I would get Alex (Smith) back in there, but I’m looking for another opportunity for the kid to get back in there to see if there’s anything he learned while sitting down,” Irvin said.
