Rookie quarterback Justin Fields has been electric through training camp and preseason for the Chicago Bears. Many Bears fans have openly called for him to supplant veteran Andy Dalton as the team’s Week 1 starting quarterback.
Matt Nagy and the Bears brass has stood by Dalton as their starter, after reportedly promising him the job. The issue may work itself out, in an unfortunate manner for all involved.
According to Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times, Fields is being held back today due to a “groin muscle injury.” While it doesn’t sound serious, at least based on these baseline reports, a setback to a young quarterback at this pretty vital part of training camp is far from ideal.
Fields was dynamite in his first preseason game over the weekend, a 20-13 win over the Miami Dolphins. He was 14-for-20 for 142 yards and a touchdown, and added 33 yards and a score on the ground.

When asked about the speed of his first NFL game, Justin Fields made a bold admission: “It was actually kinda slow to me.” Along with his play, that statement had Bears fans convinced that he’s ready to go Week 1.
It is only a matter of time before Fields starts for Chicago, whether it comes at the start of the season, or a few weeks in. The team is right to protect him here though, if he has a groin issue. You certainly don’t want something like that lingering.
The Chicago Bears face the Buffalo Bills in their second preseason game, on Aug. 21. Matt Nagy says the goal is for him to be ready to go by then, but obviously that remains up in the air.
