Mark Brunell was teammates with countless great players over the course of his career, but none as special as Drew Brees. He was Brees’ backup for two years in New Orleans and was part of their Super Bowl roster in 2009.
Fast forward to the present day, and Brunell is the quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions. The most important goal for Brunell this season is to get Jared Goff back on the right track.
Goff showed a lot of promise early in his NFL career, but his production has declined for the past two seasons. That’s one of the main reasons why the Rams traded him to the Lions this offseason.
Despite Goff’s recent rough patch, Brunell is very optimistic that the former No. 1 pick can return to his Pro Bowl form. In fact, he seems some similarities between Brees and Goff.
“He has a lot of qualities that I saw in Drew Brees,” Brunell said, via The Detroit News. “Really, the passion for the game, the work ethic, the leadership. There are some similarities there, which is great to see.”
Brunell didn’t just rave about Goff’s intangibles off the field, he also gave him credit for being a smart decision-maker.
“As far as him on the field, you guys have seen it, he can throw that ball. He makes good decisions with it, and he’s really grown into this offense to the point where he’s doing a good job with it.”
While NFL fans should be excited about Goff’s outlook in Detroit, they just can’t seem to get past the fact that Brunell compared him to Brees. And honestly, that means Goff has a lot to live up to this fall.
The Lions aren’t expected to be a playoff-caliber team this season, but that could change if Goff shows some Brees-like qualities.
