The man who killed a college football player and injured an NFL player was convicted by a jury on Friday.
Francisco “Franky” Mendez, 21, was found guilty of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder by a Kansas jury this week.
Mendez fatally shot Washburn University cornerback Dwane Simmons, 23, in an April 2019 shooting. He also injured Atlanta Falcons defensive back Corey Ballentine.
Simmons and Ballentine were best friends. They were out on April 28, 2019, celebrating Ballentine getting picked by the Giants in the NFL Draft.

Our thoughts continue to be with Simmons’ family.
Ballentine, 25, spent the first two seasons of his NFL career with the Giants. He’s since played for the Jets, Lions and Falcons.
Mendez will be sentenced at a later date.
