Mack Brown Reacts To Texas’ Move To The SEC

Winning is everything in sports, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise former Texas head coach Mack Brown is concerned for the Longhorns.

Texas is leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. The move will be made official in a few years when the Longhorns’ television contracts expire. Until then, the Big 12 will be clinging to its top two powers in Texas and Oklahoma.

Here’s the problem the Longhorns are currently facing: they’ve struggled to win games in the Big 12 these past few years, so how in the world are they going to win in the SEC? That’s the same sentiment Brown echoed when discussing Texas’ move to the SEC during an interview with Paul Finebaum this week.

Sure, the Longhorns will make more money because of their involvement in the SEC. But it may cost them wins in the process.

“I would think, just in listening to ADs across the country and the presidents, all of these moves are about money and securing your place at the highest level of sports long-term,” Brown told Finebaum, via 247Sports. “And obviously most of that is TV money. And also the better schedule that you have the more enticing it is for season ticket sales and fans, but you’ve gotta win.

“I think that’s what all of this comes down to. If you don’t win, regardless of whether you’re Texas or Oklahoma or Ole Miss or North Carolina or Clemson, it doesn’t work. Because I’ve tried it both ways and people like it better if you win.”

Mack Brown is spot-on here.

Texas will always be a national brand, and that brand should expand even more by playing in the SEC. But wins will be tougher to come by. The Longhorns’ decision to leave the Big 12 could eventually come back to haunt them.

Luckily, the move isn’t imminent. Texas has several years to ramp up its recruiting efforts and win big before transitioning to SEC play.
