LSU Football Announces Decision On Tiger Stadium Policy

Last week, the New Orleans Saints announced that they would require either proof of a single vaccination dose or a negative COVID-19 test to enter the Caesar’s Superdome this upcoming season. On Tuesday, LSU football revealed that they will follow their state’s NFL team in implementing enhanced safety guidelines this fall.

LSU announced that all guests 12 years of age or older will be required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken 72 hours prior to entry into Tiger Stadium in order to attend the school’s home games this season. Attendees younger than 12 will not need to present a negative test, but those ages 5-11 will need to wear a mask at Tigers’ home games.

The policy will go into effect on September 11th for LSU’s home opener against McNeese State.

“As the flagship institution of the state of Louisiana, our foremost responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students, our supporters, and our community,” LSU President William F. Tate IV said in a statement. “While we are aware of the diverse perspectives across the nation regarding masks and vaccinations, we must take all reasonable measures to protect our campus and community, not only on gamedays, but long after guests have left Tiger Stadium. The current threat to our lives, our health, and to our medical systems due to COVID-19 is overburdening our hospitals, and we must do our part to stop the spread.”

LSU Athletics will continue to update fans on this season’s procedures – including gameday prescreening options to expedite entry, further masking requirements, pop-up vaccination events, FAQs, and more – as they are finalized. The first update will be posted on Friday, August 27

LSU plans to update fans on other safety measures that will be taken to protect attendees at Tiger Stadium over the next few weeks. According to Tuesday’s announcement, more information will be provided by the end of this week.

The decision by LSU football comes as the vaccination rate in Louisiana remains below 50 percent as of late August.

LSU is one of the first major college football programs to announce a vaccine policy for the upcoming 2021 season. Time will tell if other schools follow suit over the coming weeks.
