The Houston Texans have plenty of draft capital heading into the first round. At this moment, they own the No. 3 and No. 13 picks on Day 1.
During this Tuesday’s press conference, Texans head coach Lovie Smith made it very clear that one of those picks will not be used on a quarterback.
The reason Houston isn’t eager to draft a quarterback on Thursday is because the coaching staff has confidence in Davis Mills.
“As a general rule, I guess you can have four [quarterbacks]. Some teams have four,” Smith said. “I think once you have three quarterbacks on your roster, you should feel pretty good about that, and we do. We keep all options open, but we feel good about our quarterback room right now — leading off with Davis Mills. I’ve talked about him and our feelings about who our leader will be.”

The Texans selected Mills with the 67th pick in the 2021 draft.
Mills showed a lot of promise as a rookie, completing 66.8 percent of his pass attempts for 2,664 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Another year of development under Texans offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton could pay dividends for Mills, especially if the Texans upgrade their wide receiver room in the draft.
