Louis Oosthuizen Withdraws From The Masters: Fans React

April 9, 2022 by The Spun

Louis Oosthuizen at the Masters.

Louis Oosthuizen’s continued pursuit of his second major will be cut short at the 2022 Masters Tournament. He has withdrawn from the tournament today.

Oosthuizen withdrew from the Masters prior to the start of the second round following an injury. His withdrawal marks the first time since 2017 that he won’t play into the weekend of a major.

Oosthuizen had a rough start to his 2022 Masters run anyway. He finished his first round with a 76 and was visibly discomforted in the process. It would have taken a Herculean round just to make it over the cut line even if he had felt fine this morning.

Golf fans are collectively gutted for Oosthuizen. Many have taken to Twitter to try and console him or use him as an example of a well-conditioned golfer who can get hurt like all of the others:

Get well soon @Louis57TM 💪🏻⛳️ #themasters https://t.co/8wWd9IKh5c

Not too surprised. He was grabbing his back at times on the front 9 yesterday. Hope it gets better soon. He still had some nice shots yesterday. https://t.co/zqEvUxiiSm

Hate this for Louis but it’s just a reminder: no matter how buttery your swing, you can always get hurt. Swing hard, kids. https://t.co/cwElqk0WvE

But others are complaining that his absence will make the group of Tiger Woods and Joaquin Niemann a lot slower:

Tiger Woods and Joaquin Nieman now a twosome on what will be a SLOW day with all the wind. Bryson & Cam Smith also a twosome in front of them with Paul Casey’s Thursday withdrawal. Kevin Na is two groups in front of them, just sayin. #themasters https://t.co/Hru9C20klU

Louis Oosthuizen won the 2020 Open Championship and has been superb at the majors in recent years. He had a stunning three straight top-3 finishes in the last three majors of 2021.

Oosthuizen has finished in the top-7 in five of the last nine majors.

But outright wins have been hard to come by since 2018. Oosthuizen has gained a reputation for being a perpetual runner-up and has become the butt of some jokes because of it.

Hopefully Oosthuizen is able to mend and return to playing sooner rather than later.
