The Yankees’ walk-off win over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday afternoon was marred by an ugly incident involving New York fans.
Yankee fans in the right field bleachers threw garbage at Cleveland outfielders Myles Straw and Oscar Mercado as they chased after Gleyber Torres’ game-winning single in the gap. After the game, Straw, who had been jawing with the fans earlier in the inning, called the Bronx Bomber fanbase “the worst on the planet.”
During Straw’s confrontation with fans–which occurred while left fielder Steven Kwan was being checked out for a possible concussion after crashing into the wall–the 27-year-old centerfielder could be seen scaling the fence to get face-to-face with a couple of crowd members. Now, thanks to cell phone recordings, we can tell what the intense conversation sounded like.
Straw and Mercado thought the Yankee fans were celebrating Kwan’s injury. When he climbed the wall, he implored one spectator to “hit me m—-rf—-r.”

No one took Straw up on his offer, but as we saw, some fans did throw trash at him moments later.
All in all, this whole incident is not a great look for all parties involved and Major League Baseball in general.
