On the field, the Patriots–Jets rivalry has been completely one-sided for the better part of 20 years. Off the field, the two fanbases despise each other like no other NFL rivals. And that makes today’s Patriots’ tweet especially interesting.
Taking to Twitter this morning, the Patriots begrudgingly wrote that they’re rooting for the Jets today. If the Jets beat the Buffalo Bills today, it opens the door for the Patriots to win the AFC East if they beat the Miami Dolphins.
“Can’t believe we’re about to say this but… Let’s go [New York Jets],” the team wrote. They added a “hand over mouth” emote to express how funny it was to say.
As you can imagine, Jets fans quickly latched onto the tweet and were not amused. Even former players were dismissing the tweet as being a backhanded compliment:

Unfortunately, the numbers don’t indicate that the Patriots will be getting their wish today.
The Jets will be without their top three wide receivers and several of their starters on the offensive line against the Bills’ top-2 defense. Buffalo, on the other hand, have just about every essential player for today’s game.
And with the Bills actually playing for something – a division title and home playoff game – they won’t be going easy on the hapless Jets.
Nevertheless, we saw a rare moment of solidarity between two franchises that despise one another.
We won’t see many more in our lifetimes.
