For the first time in his NFL career, Patrick Mahomes won’t have Tyreek Hill at his disposal. One can only wonder what the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback felt as the team traded his long-time target to the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday
While he stayed quiet on that subject, Mahomes set his sights ahead by welcoming aboard Kansas City’s newest receiver.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a three-year, $30 million deal. His new MVP quarterback had a succinct response to the news.

Valdes-Scantling shouldn’t be expected to replace Hill, who scored more receiving touchdowns in 2020 (15) than MVS did in four seasons with the Green Bay Packers (13). Last year, Valdes-Scantling only caught 26 of 55 targets for 430 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 11 games.
The contract suggests Kansas City will give the 27-year-old more opportunities to break out alongside his new superstar passer. He’s also a speed demon averaging a superb 17.5 yards per reception in his career, but Valdes-Scantling has secured under half (49.8%) of his targets.
It’s a high-upside signing that may have cost more than some expected given Valdes-Scantling’s portfolio. Though probably not Mahomes’ new unquestioned No. 1 receiver, he at least offers immense vertical upside with one of the NFL’s best downfield passers.
Perhaps most importantly for the Chiefs, Mahomes seems to approve the signing.
