An Oscars speech mentioning President Biden and Brittney Griner is trending on social media on Sunday evening.
Griner, one of the best players in the WNBA, remains in Russian custody. She was reportedly arrested at the airport when Russian authorities say they found cannabis oil inside of her luggage.
The former Baylor Bears star is facing serious charges that could lead to years in prison.
It’s a tricky situation, as Griner’s family does not want this to become a global story played out through the media.
“There have been a lot of stories asking why Griner’s predicament isn’t a bigger deal and pointing out the inequities between men’s and women’s sports. The people around her say those are great points, but… not right now. Every time the heat gets turned up, they cringe,” ESPN’s T.J Quinn says.
Still, that’s not stopping people from mentioning her in grand fashion.
Sunday night, an Oscars winner called on President Biden to bring Brittney Griner home.
The Queen of Basketball won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject.
