Look: MLB Player Hits First Career Home Run As His Parents Were Being Interviewed

April 10, 2022 by The Spun

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena in a postgame interview with Heidi Watney.

Every once in a while, the sports world writes a script that no writer ever could.

During Friday night’s broadcast of the Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros on Apple TV+, sideline reporter Heidi Watney conducted a live interview with the parents of Major League rookie Jeremy Pena.

While Watney discussed the young Astros’ budding career with the Pena family, the 24-year-old shortstop drove his first career MLB home run deep into left-center field.

Understandably, the Pena family burst with excitement mid-interview as they watched their son round the bases.

“Happy, happy, happy now,” Pena’s father repeated.

Pena enters the 2022 season with the daunting task of replacing two-time All-Star Carlos Correa at the starting shortstop position. Correa, who spent the last eight seasons as an anchor in the Houston infield, signed with the Minnesota Twins last month.

Pena looked excellent through eight spring training games, logging two home runs and nine RBI with a .350 batting average. Through his first two regular-season MLB games, he’s continued his solid batting with a .333 BA — including last nights career-first homer.

Pena’s solo shot helped propel the Astros to their 13-6 blowout victory in Los Angeles on Friday night. Houston are currently 2-0 to start the season after a 3-1 Opening Day win on Thursday.

Pena and the Astros will take on the Angels yet again tonight at 9:07 p.m. ET.
