The NFL has seen a significant number of officials retire before the 2022 season kicks off.
Unfortunately, that number climbed yet again on Tuesday afternoon. According to a new report, two more officials have decided to walk away from the game, bringing the on-field official departure total to nine.
According to a report from Football Zebras, veteran officials Gary Cavaletto and Rich Hall are retiring. That leaves the league with nine vacancies to fill before the 2022 season kicks off.
Here’s more, via Football Zebras:
The NFL added two late retirements recently as veteran deep wing Gary Cavaletto and umpire Rich Hall have left the league. As of this writing, a total of nine on-field officials have retired. The NFL needs to fill two replay official positions with the retirement of John McGrath and the mid-season passing of Carl Madsen.
Hall spent 18 seasons in the NFL – all as an umpire for the league. As for Cavaletto, he was in the league for 19 years and called one Super Bowl.
He might be most well-known for a controversial call during the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams NFC title game in 2018.
The NFL has plenty of work to do.
