April 6, 2022 by The Spun

A bunch of baseballs with the MLB logo on it in a net.

After 10 MLB seasons, veteran middle infielder Jordy Mercer is calling it a career.

On Tuesday, Mercer took to his Twitter account to thank the game of baseball, as well as others, as he says goodbye to the game.

“Thank You baseball!” the 35-year-old said. “Thank you for the opportunity and love you have given me. I hope I loved you back just as much. Thank you to the ones that have supported me, especially my family every step of way. It’s Time!! Excited for the next chapter.”

Mercer spent a decade in the bigs, playing the majority of his career in Pittsburgh before stints with the Tigers, Yankees and Nationals.

Drafted in the third round out of Oklahoma State in 2008, Mercer debuted with the Pirates four years later. Over the course of his 10 years in the MLB, the Oklahoma native appeared in 950 games, batting .256 with 796 career hits and 66 home runs.

Mercer finished out his career backing up Trea Turner in Washington; but in his days with the Pirates regularly saw action in over 100 games each season.

Congrats to Jordy Mercer on a successful MLB career, and well wishes in retirement!
