LeBron James had a complicated relationship with J.R. Smith on the basketball court over the years. Off the court, the two are great friends. That friendship was on full display on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith enrolled at North Carolina A&T a few weeks ago with aspirations to play for the university’s golf team. His wish was granted on Tuesday when the NCAA announced Smith’s approved eligibility.
“It was probably one of the most exciting feelings I’ve had in a while,” Smith said after he was granted eligibility. “I really didn’t know how it was going to go. … but to be able to actually call myself a student-athlete is a great feeling.”
LeBron is almost just as excited. He sent his former teammate and longtime friend a message on Tuesday following the terrific news.
“So happy and proud of you my brother @TheRealJRSmith!!!! Love you kid! Best of luck you student/athlete GO AGGIES TEAM,” LeBron said on Twitter.

LeBron James and J.R. Smith’s most memorable moment on the court came back in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals. Smith infamously forgot how much time was left in regulation, dribbling the ball out toward half-court and sending the game to overtime in the process. LeBron’s reaction went viral and the Cavaliers proceeded to lose the game.
Both LeBron and J.R. have put the situation behind them. They’re great friends and shared many other memorable moments on the court.
Congrats, J.R.! Good luck at North Carolina A&T.
