Kirby Smart finally got over the hump and beat Nick Saban for the first time ever in Monday’s national championship game. Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs outlasted the Alabama Crimson Tide in a hard-fought contest at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, 33-18.
Although the Bulldogs came into the title game as the favorites, their victory came as a bit of surprise to many around the world of college football. The feat a massive accomplishment for the program considering Georgia hadn’t beat Alabama in its last seven tries.
After Georgia sealed the win, former players, media members and fans took to social media to celebrate the Bulldogs national title. One of the latest to weigh in with a message of congratulations was Smart’s peer, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.
Kiffin took to social media to express how happy he was for Georgia and its head coach after Monday’s victory.
“Congrats!! Amazing journey and hard work. Very happy for you Kirby Smart and Georgia Enjoy,” Kiffin wrote on Twitter Tuesday morning.

Kiffin and Smart have a long history together. The two spent time on Saban’s staff at Alabama from 2014-15 before eventually leaving for head coaching gigs of their own.
Smart became just the second of Saban’s former assistants to beat his former boss while being the head coach on the opposite sidelines. Jimbo Fisher, who served as the offensive coordinator during Saban’s time at LSU, accomplished the feat earlier this season when Texas A&M beat Alabama on a last-second field goal.
Georgia’s victory on Monday night earned the Bulldogs their first national title since 1980 and their third championship in program history. Former walk-on Stetson Bennett won the game’s offensive MVP award after throwing two fourth quarter touchdowns to cap off a miraculous, multi-year journey as the team’s quarterback.
