Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin loves to mess around and create waves on Twitter. This week, he reached into his bag of Nick Saban jokes in response to some kind words for former colleague Ed Orgeron.
Coach O and Kiffin have a long history together. The two were on Pete Carroll’s national championship-winning USC staffs, and Orgeron worked for Kiffin at Tennessee and USC, where Kiffin served as head coach. He also says that he nearly hired Kiffin as LSU’s offensive coordinator, per The Rebel Walk.
“I believe it was the year 2000, so I’ve known Lane for 20 years and we became good friends. I respect him as a coach,” Orgeron said. “There’s no question I respect his knowledge of the game. He got me to leave the NFL to go with him to Tennessee. He was going to come with me if I got the job (at LSU) if he did not get a head job and be my offensive coordinator. He’s a great recruiter. I mean me and him have recruited a lot of great players together. We have an everlasting bond, we won two championships together.”
Kiffin had some fun with all that praise. Going with emoji representing Nick Saban’s old “rat poison” line, about people reading their own positive press, he responded to the story.

It’s pretty perfect Lane Kiffin, somehow lumping in a slight Saban reference/dig into praise about his own coaching abilities by an old friend. We’d have it no other way.
Ole Miss and LSU finish up their regular seasons on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Both programs have gone in very different directions this fall.
The Rebels have to be pretty happy with their 4-4 mark under a new head coach, after some lean years. Kiffin has injected some of the offensive swagger that the team had in the Hugh Freeze years back into the program. LSU, meanwhile, is down at 4-5 after a national championship last year, a disappointing results however you cut it. The Tigers did shock Florida last weekend, so there have been positive moments.
