Lane Kiffin Addresses His Brother’s Sudden Departure

March 31, 2022 by The Spun

Ole Miss fans were rather surprised earlier in this offseason when Chris Kiffin – the younger brother of head coach Lane Kiffin – left the team after just a few weeks on staff. The elder Kiffin has now addressed his departure.

In a recent press conference, Lane admitted that the situation was unique before it was his brother leaving. He alluded to the possibility that Chris was having second thoughts and that his family may have prompted him to abandon the job.

“Obviously, it’s unique because it’s your brother, and so, he came back and that happens sometimes,” Kiffin said. “You take jobs at the end of the season and you’re excited about it but then you get there and you kind of have second thoughts. It happens with recruits when they sign to schools and it happens with coaches. Kids and adults aren’t a whole lot different. With jobs with salaries and even more with four kids, they’re used to their teams and their friends up there. They were really entrenched there and playing sports, all that stuff, so I get it.”

Chris Kiffin has spent the last two seasons as the defensive line coach of the Cleveland Browns. After initially taking an Ole Miss job, he’s slated to return to Cleveland for a third year.

Chris and Lane Kiffin have worked together several times in their respective coaching careers. They shared one year at USC and one year at Florida Atlantic before Chris got hired by the San Francisco 49ers in 2018.

So the Kiffin brothers won’t be working together for a third time in 2022.

But so long as Lane has his job in Oxford, Mississippi, never say never on a family reunion.
