The college football season is officially underway.
On Saturday, ESPN’s College GameDay crew suited up for the first time this year. And as they do each season, each co-host gave their picks for this year’s national championship winner.
Longtime analyst Kirk Herbstreit went with a fairly common choice ahead of the 2021 season, taking the Oklahoma Sooners over the reigning champion Alabama Crimson Tide in this year’s national title game.
“I got Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley finally with all these tweaks … They’ve made adjustments to the defense. They beat Alabama in the national championship,” he said.
Herbstreit didn’t make any groundbreaking predictions with his College Football Playoff field. Taking each of the top-four teams in the preseason AP poll (even down to their current position), the College GameDay host has Alabama vs. Ohio State in the first semifinal and Oklahoma vs. Clemson in the other.

Believe it or not none of the GameDay hosts picked the preseason No. 1 Crimson Tide to win this year’s title.
Desmond Howard and Reece Davis both also went with Oklahoma over Alabama. David Pollack took Georgia over Alabama. And Lee Corso, who didn’t even have Bama in his top-four, went with Georgia over Oklahoma.
