College football is officially back and that means ESPN’s College GameDay is back on TV screens around the country.
During Saturday morning’s show, the GameDay crew gave a brief look at the day’s slate of games. The first game of the day pits Nebraska against Illinois in a Big Ten showdown.
Before the game kicks off, Kirk Herbstreit had an honest message for Nebraska fans about the team’s recent struggles.
Here’s what Herbie had to say, via 247Sports:
“I think you’re only as good as the playmakers that you have,” Herbstreit said. “You look at Nebraska in the Big Ten and they’re lacking dynamic playmakers at the skill spots. So we’ll see how much they’ve improved in that area. But (Adrian) Martinez man, people forget in 2018 he was like a human (highlight) … he’s more than capable of getting it done.”
Herbie isn’t the only one with reservations about the Nebraska football program given its recent issues. Fellow analyst David Pollack pointed out the lack of playmakers to be able to keep pace in the Big Ten.
“One thing that is disturbing if you’re a Nebraska fan, the 12-20 is something, but when you start losing your most dynamic players to the transfer portal with (playmaker) Wan’Dale (Robinson) going to Kentucky and (quarterback) Luke McCaffrey leaving, listen, it’s tough,” Pollack said. “The season has to start off well. They have to beat Illinois. They need a shot in the arm. Nebraska has definitely been struggling now with the transfer portal now adding more to it.”
Can Nebraska kick the 2021 season off with a win over Illinois?
