Kirk Cousins Wants To Retire A Viking: NFL Fans React

April 12, 2022 by The Spun

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins celebrates the win over New Orleans.

Kirk Cousins extended his stay with the Minnesota Vikings by signing a one-year extension on Monday. While the new deal keeps the 33-year-old quarterback with the NFC North squad through 2023, he has his sights set on an even longer tenure.

When speaking to reporters Monday, per Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune, Cousins said he wants to spend the rest of his career in Minnesota. However, he realizes he needs to prove himself worthy of a long-term arrangement.

“My mind-set was really to be a Viking,” Cousins said. “I would like to retire as a Viking, and so I would like to play my way into that, if you will. I know I’ve got to earn the right to do that.”

Many fans responded enthusiastically to the sentiment, confirming their desire to see Cousins stay with the Vikings.

However, based on their Twitter bios, that support mostly came from Packers fans.

Not many Vikings fans are as eager to see Cousins stick around. They’ve gone 33-29-1 in his starts over four seasons with only one playoff appearance. Considering he’s also worked with star skill-position players Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, and Justin Jefferson, few see him as a difference-maker capable of steering a championship squad.

Yet Cousins has posted a quarterback rating above 100 in each of the last three seasons. Last year, he accrued 4,221 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions in 16 starts.

Cousins isn’t an elite option. But if he ever leaves, the Vikings could quickly realize that they can do much worse under center.
