Despite an impressive preseason showing from rookie quarterback Justin Fields, the No. 11 overall pick will be starting the season behind veteran QB Andy Dalton.
Dalton was named the team’s Week 1 starting quarterback earlier this week. And on Monday morning, we got another update on Fields’ backup QB situation.
According to Bears insider Adam Jahns, Fields will be the franchise’s scout team quarterback during the regular season.
Justin Fields will be the Bears’ scout-team quarterback during game weeks as the No. 2 quarterback during the regular season.

On one hand, this could be a good situation to help prepare Fields against a starting NFL defense. On the other hand, it may be difficult to become familiar with the Bears’ playbook while trying to emulate future opponents.
A significant portion of the Chicago fanbase was furious when head coach Matt Nagy named Dalton as the starter over Fields.
That frustration is certainly being shown with this decision as well.
Scout team? So he won’t even be running Bears plays in practice let alone practice with the first team???? This is extremely nasty https://t.co/d5GzrF7SQy

Why does this franchise enjoy pissing their fans off? i don’t understand https://t.co/RZ3UtkB7lE

Through three preseason games this year, Fields posted an impressive rookie stat line — throwing 30/49 for 276 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 96.98 passer rating. As a dual-threat option, he also added 92 yards rushing.
Making a few incredible throws, this stat line doesn’t really even do his performance justice.

The Bears will kickoff their 2021 season with a matchup against a solid Los Angeles Rams defense.
Depending on Dalton’s Week 1 performance, Fields could be pulled from that scout team squad earlier than anticipated.
