Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto has been one of baseball’s most colorful characters for years now. But the 38-year-old has just decided to take the plunge: He’s joining Twitter.
Votto made his first tweet last week, with his first message being an homage to the late comedian Bernie Mac. “I miss Bernie Mac,” Votto tweeted on Friday. That was Votto’s first tweet despite first creating his account in March 2020.
Today, Votto made his second tweet and seemingly announced that he is ready to start tweeting a lot more frequently. “On Twitter now, y’all thought I was good at ball,” he wrote.
Votto’s new tweet is going viral with over 1,200 likes, 200 retweets and 100 comments in the first 10 minutes. Fans quickly called on Votto to either stay on Twitter and avoid Facebook, or offer up more proof that it’s the really him:

Joey Votto is a six-time All-Star, a former MVP and Gold Glove winner. He finished in the top 22 for MVP voting another eight times.
But Votto is also a notoriously fun talker who even likes talking to opposing players on the plate. Some MLB fans got to experience that for the first time during the recent season opener against the Braves:

Perhaps best of all, Joey Votto has been a mainstay of Major League Baseball and is still playing at a very high level in his late 30s.
He’s a treasure for the Reds, and now a treasure for social media mavens as well.
