New York Jets fans are collectively holding their breath right now. Moments ago, it was announced that Carl Lawson had to be carted off the practice field because of a leg injury.
Lawson, 26, was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In four seasons with the Bengals, he had 83 quarterback hits, 81 tackles, 20 sacks and two forced fumbles.
After his rookie deal with the Bengals expired, Lawson signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Jets.
It’s unclear how severe Lawson’s injury is right now, but the fact that he had to be carted off the field isn’t a great sign.

There’s no sugarcoating how huge of a loss this would be for the Jets. The front office signed Lawson with the hope that he’d anchor their pass rush.
“Hard to express how silent this place got when Carl Lawson, the unquestioned star of Jets training camp, went down,” Jets reporter Connor Hughes said. “No further details known right now, but this would be a massive, horrific blow to defense if he’s forced to miss time.”
If Lawson has to miss a significant period of time, the Jets will need Ronald Blair to step up. He’s currently behind Lawson on the depth chart.
As for this weekend’s showdown with the Packers, it’s safe to say we won’t see Lawson in action.
