As the Dallas Cowboys head into the NFL playoffs, one of their major concerns has to be the performance of veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein.
Zuerlein has missed a career-high six extra points this season, including three in the last four games. His 82.9% field goal percentage is right in line with his career average, but Zuerlein is just 2-for-5 on kicks of 50-plus yards.
The 34-year-old “Legatron” hit a few clutch kicks early in the season, but his recent play has Cowboys fans worried. Head coach Mike McCarthy is expressing confidence in Zuerlein, but owner Jerry Jones even admitted on the radio today that the team has some concerns.
However, Jones did call Zuerlein a “sound, experienced kicker” and added that the Cowboys don’t feel there is a better option out there at the moment.
Jerry Jones on @1053thefan: Greg Zuerlein’s struggles have “absolutely” altered our game plan. “He’s a sound kicker, experienced kicker, our guys are all sensitive about how to approach the game.”
“If a better alternative was out there, we’d be using it. Everything is at stake.”

Dallas will begin its playoff march this Sunday at home against the San Francisco 49ers. In recent games at AT&T Stadium, Zuerlien missed a field goal in a 25-22 loss to the Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago and misfired on an extra point and a field goal in a Thanksgiving Day loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Cowboys have to hope those struggles don’t pop up this weekend.
