Philadelphia Eagles second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts was a surprising late scratch before last week’s preseason game against the New England Patriots.
Hurts, who went through pregame warmups, sat out with a stomach ailment. He later went to the hospital and was diagnosed with an infection which kept him sidelined for a couple of days.
Hurts returned to the practice field on Sunday and has reportedly shown no ill effects. Ever the competitor, he admitted this afternoon that he did not want to miss last week’s game but was “hurting” and ultimately had to play it safe.
“I was debating whether to say something. I said something with the intention of still playing,” Hurts said, via NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

While Hurts is feeling well enough to practice, the Eagles are still unsure whether or not they will play him in the preseason finale against the New York Jets on Friday.
“That’s something we’re going to continue to evaluate,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said, via NBCSports. “Again, like I said for the past couple games, I’d hate to give you an answer and then it not play out, so that’s something that is under constant evaluation. We are going to see how the work goes against the Jets and make a decision after that.”
Hurts has not officially been named the team’s starting quarterback, but the expectation is he has earned the job over veteran Joe Flacco.
