Despite taking Trevor Lawrence No. 1 overall in the draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to make Lawrence compete for the starting job against third-year veteran Gardner Minshew.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell offered an update on the QB battle. He said that the team is going to keep it as a battle all the way until they make a decision. But right now the two quarterbacks are still “status quo.”
“We’re still going to handle it that way until we end up making the final decision,” Bevell said. ”Right now, they are still status quo. We’re trying to make everybody better. We want competition at each and every position. Both guys are getting better because of it.”
There wasn’t a whole lot to gauge from the two quarterbacks in their preseason game against the Cleveland Browns last week. Lawrence went 6 of 9 for 71 yards while Minshew went 4 of 8 for 47 yards with an interception.

Jacksonville Jaguars fans no doubt want Trevor Lawrence to start so they can get his development started – even if he isn’t ready to win now. Lawrence was one of the most hyped draft prospect of the last decade after a historic career at Clemson.
But Gardner Minshew is no slouch. Despite his 7-13 record as a starter, he is accurate with the ball and rarely turns it over. In 23 games played he has 37 touchdown passes with just 11 picks.
Who is more likely to win the starting job for the Jacksonville Jaguars?
