The Masters Club Dinner has long been one of the most fun annual traditions in golf. But few golfers have gotten to enjoy the dinner as many times as golf legend Jack Nicklaus.
Taking to Twitter today, Nicklaus declared that this week’s Masters Dinner was perhaps the best that he could recall. He enjoyed the food, company and conversation. But one part stuck out from the rest of the night.
At one point, reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama delivered a three-minute speech in English without using a note despite the fact he isn’t fluent in the language. To his bigger surprise, three-time Masters winner Gary Player delivered a response speech in Japanese. Though unlike Matsuyama, Player needed notes.
“Was perhaps best @TheMasters Club Dinner I recall. Great company & conversation. Food was sensational! Best part was when Hideki Matsuyama, who doesn’t speak English well, gave a 3-min speech in English—without a single note. @GaryPlayer then responded. In Japanese. With notes,” Nicklaus wrote, adding a wink emoji at the end.

The 2022 Masters Club Dinner was already a viral affair thanks to the incredible menu the members got to enjoy.
Sushi, wagyu beef and Japanese shortcake were just a few of the standout items on the menu ahead of Matsuyama’s upcoming Masters win anniversary.
In the near 60 years since Jack Nicklaus won his first Masters he’s no doubt had some incredible dinners.
This one must have been really special to outshine the other ones.
