Veteran running back Alfred Morris continues to carve out a role in the NFL, years after he stopped putting up 1,000 yard seasons. Last year, he was fairly productive in nine games with the New York Giants, putting up 257 total yards and two scores in nine games, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
Morris was hoping to stick with the Giants for an additional year. He signed back with the team a few weeks ago, as he hopes to enter his 10th NFL season.
The Giants offense sputtered in the team’s first preseason game, falling to their MetLife Stadium roommates the New York Jets 12-7. With superstar running back Saquon Barkley out, six Giants recorded carries on Saturday. Morris was the least productive.
He touched the ball twice on Saturday, running for -4 yards total. Morris was also targeted once in the passing game, but did not record a catch. Now, three days later, he has been released.

Morris broke out as a rookie with Washington, putting up his best numbers in his first year in the league. The former sixth-round pick set career highs with 335 carries for 1,613 yards—good for a 4.8 average—and 13 touchdowns that season, sharing a backfield with fellow rookie phenom Robert Griffin III.
Morris would follow it up with a 1,275 season in 2013 and 1,074 yards in 2014, but has not reached the 1,000-yard mark since. For the last five years, spent with the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, and the Giants, he has been a backup, though usually a pretty valuable one.
We’ll see if he gets another NFL shot, or if this is it for the 32 year-old former All-Pro.
