Giants Owner Reveals If Dave Gettleman Is On Hot Seat

August 17, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Dave Gettleman of the New York Giants.

The New York Giants have high expectations headed into a new NFL season this fall. General manager Dave Gettleman was aggressive this offseason in pursuing free agents to fill holes on the roster and now the team expects to compete for an NFC East title.

However, since Gettleman’s arrival to the Giants, the franchise has stumbled along to a 15-33 record over the past three seasons, Headed into his fourth year on the job, many around the NFL have wondered if he’s in danger of losing his gig.

Giants owner John Mara, who figures to be the chief decision-maker on whether Gettleman stays or goes, said that his general manager isn’t exactly on the hot seat headed into this fall. He did say that the whole organization is under pressure from a rabid fanbase to produce results this season.

“We’re all on the hot seat with our fans in particular,” Mara said when asked if Gettleman is on the hot seat, via SNY. “We’ve given them too many losing seasons, it’s time for us to start winning but, no, I wouldn’t say that. I wouldn’t say that’s an accurate statement.”

Although Mara seemed fairly definitive in his assessment of Gettleman’s status, some NFL fans aren’t sold that the Giants general manager will be safe if the team doesn’t perform well this year. The front office was aggressive in their moves in free agency and in the draft which could pay off, but could backfire depending on how the season plays out.

The Giants went 6-10 in Joe Judge’s first year as head coach and struggled to keep pace in a lackluster NFC East. If the club doesn’t break through in 2021, someone will have to take the blame for the disappointment of the last few years.

It’s very possible that Gettleman could bear the brunt of that responsibility.
