South Carolina fired Martin after going 18-13 in his 10th season. The Gamecocks didn’t make the NCAA tournament during his tenure outside of 2017’s unexpected Final Four run.
This news comes a day after Martin celebrated his 56th birthday by calling himself the “luckiest man alive” on Twitter.
I’ve had an incredible birthday. I’m so thankful for the great people that have come into my life. I’m luckiest man alive.
Thank u 2 everyone for all the wishes.

On Martin’s birthday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel said the coach met with UMass officials Tuesday and planned to talk again Thursday. Their second encounter must have gone well for Martin to net the formal offer.
Besides going 8-7 in the shortened 2020-2021 campaign, the Minutemen have not posted a winning season since 2014-2015. The A-10 program severed ties with Matt McCall following five seasons.
If Martin accepts, UMass will gain an experienced leader who previously took Kansas State to four NCAA tournaments in five seasons.
