This weekend, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day finally made it official: C.J. Stroud will be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback to begin the season.
Stroud, who backed up Justin Fields last season, beat out Jack Miller and true freshman Kyle McCord to win the job. Reclassifying five-star Quinn Ewers arrived too late this summer to factor into the competition.
“I thought over the body of work between the spring and also through the preseason, he separated himself with his decision-making, his leadership skills, his accuracy,” Day said of Stroud during a press conference. “Now we’ve got to prepare him to play a game.”
Stroud played in three games last fall and didn’t throw a pass, though he did have a 48-yard rushing touchdown against Michigan State. The former four-star recruit may not have much experience, but he does possess plenty of talent, and Fox Sports Radio’s Aaron Torres says he recently spoke with a former NFL Pro Bowler who is a big fan of Stroud’s.
“He throws the ball better than a bunch of guys that get paid on Sundays to do it,” Torres said the anonymous Pro Bowler told him about Stroud.
Little note for Ohio State football fans: Talked with a former NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver this week, who has worked out with CJ Stroud.
His quote: “He throws the ball better than a bunch of guys that get paid on Sunday’s to do it.”
So yeah, Buckeyes aint slowing down this year

Whether that is actually true or not can’t be determined until Stroud actually plays this fall. However, given Ohio State’s track record of replacing high-quality quarterbacks with other high-quality quarterbacks, Buckeye fans should be pretty confident that the California native can get the job done.
Ohio State will open up its 2021 season against Minnesota on Thursday, September 2.
