Even before Justin Fields turned in an impressive performance in his preseason debut, one ESPN analyst thought the Chicago Bears were being slept on.
Fields passed for 142 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 33 yards and another score in his first NFL action on Saturday. On Friday, ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum sung Fields and the Bears’ praises on Get Up!.
The former New York Jets general manager declared that Fields has an “incredibly high ceiling” and should be the Bears’ starter in Week 1. He went on to say that the general public is “sleeping on” Chicago’s chances in 2021.
“This was a team that went to the playoffs last year, [has] a good defense,” Tannenbaum said. “I think we’re sleeping on the Bears a little bit.”

Last year, despite middling quarterback play from Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, the Bears managed to go 8-8 and secure a Wild Card berth on the strength of their defense. Most prognosticators have Chicago finishing near the bottom of the league this season.
If the Bears overachieve and Fields is a rookie hit, Tannenbaum can take a bit of a bow for calling it before it happened.
