Former NFL Coach Is Hearing 2 Schools Will Join The Big Ten

The Big 12 conference already underwent seismic changes this summer when Oklahoma and Texas announced that they would depart the league and make way for the SEC. That’s left the other eight schools wondering what to do next.

Realignment rumors have been everywhere since the Longhorns and the Sooners revealed their intention to leave the Big 12. Another whisper emerged earlier this week about what five of the conference’s schools are thinking about potential moves to other leagues in the near future.

FOX Sports analyst and former Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt went onto 670 The Score in Chicago on Tuesday and shared what he reportedly heard at FOX meetings this last week in Phoenix. That included some rumored partnerships between current Big 12 schools and other conferences.

Wannstedt claimed that he heard the following rumored pairings during this last week, via Dillon Davis:

  • Oklahoma State and Kansas State to the Pac-12
  • West Virginia to the ACC
  • Kansas and Iowa State to the Big Ten

Fox Sports analyst and former Pitt football coach Dave Wannstedt went on @670TheScore in Chicago this morning and said he heard the following Big 12 news at the Fox meetings last week in Phoenix:

– OSU and KSU to the Pac-12
– WVU to the ACC
– KU and Iowa State to the Big Ten

All five of those moves would be interesting and would theoretically be valuable additions to the Pac-12, the ACC and the Big Ten. On the other hand, if all of those schools were to leave the Big 12, the Power Five conference would effectively be dead. Only Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech would remain at that point.

It’s worth noting that these realignment rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. Although Wannstedt might have an inside glimpse at what’s going on inside the Big 12, a multitude of whispers have emerged ever since news of the Oklahoma and Texas move broke. It’s difficult to know which of these talks have legs and which are just smoke.

Either way, plenty of eyes will be on the rest of the Big 12 schools over the coming months to see how they respond to impending realignment.
