Former MLB All-Star Felipe Vazquez Receives Prison Sentence

Former MLB All-Star Felipe Vazquez was arrested in September 2019, after being accused of multiple serious crimes, including statutory sexual assault, sexual abuse of children, and possession of child pornography. Nearly two years later, and his prison sentence has been handed down.

After his arrest, he had an encounter with a 13 year old girl in his car which he described as “sex, but not really.” The girl reportedly alleged that the two had sex in his car before he had a game with the Pittsburgh Pirates, with whom he pitched from 2016-19.

In May, a jury in Westmoreland County, Pa., deemed him guilty on 15 counts. “The jury believed he used his position as a professional athlete to prey upon a young girl,” local assistant district attorney Jim Lazar said in Mary after the Jury’s decision.

Vazquez has been sentenced to 2-4 years in prison after the conviction. He has an addition two years of probation after he serves his time, and will have to register as a sex offender.

At the time of his arrest, Felipe Vazquez had developed into one of the best relief pitchers in baseball, making back-to-back All-Star Games in 2018-19. Major League Baseball placed him on administrative leave after his arrest.

His legal concerns aren’t limited to the trial in Pennsylvania. He faces separate charges in both Florida and Missouri, stemming from interactions with the same victim.

We’ll have more as it comes out on Vazquez’s ongoing issues.
